Née à Alep, Maha Hassan est une journaliste et une romancière kurde de Syrie. Diplômée en droit, Maha s’est consacrée par la suite à l’écriture de romans. Ses deux premiers livres, al-Lâmutanâhî – Sîrat al-âkhar (L’infini – récit de l’autre) et Lawhat al-ghilâf (La toile de couverture), paraissent en Syrie respectivement en 1995 et en 2002. En 2000, il lui est interdit de publier dans son pays: ses œuvres sont considérées féministes et “moralement condamnables”. Maha écrivait en fait sur les trois tabous de la société arabe : la politique, le sexe et la religion.
Maha a quitté son pays lors de la répression sanglante de la révolte kurde de 2004 et depuis Août 2004 vit à Paris.
Le plus : Human Rights Watch lui a discerné le prix Hellman-Hammett en 2005. Cordon Ombilical (2010) a été sélectionné parmi les six finalistes du prix Booker Arabe.
Aujourd’hui Maha poursuit son activité d’écrivaine militante : dans ses romans elle défend les droits de la femme dans le contexte arabe.

Born in Alep, Maha Hassan is a Kurd journalist and writer in Syria. With her degree in law, Maha thereafter devoted herself to writing novels. Her first two books, al-Lâmutanâhî – Sîrat al-âkhar (L’infini – récit de l’autre) et Lawhat al-ghilâf (La toile de couverture), appeared in Syria in 1995 and 2000, respectively. In 2000, she was forbidden to publish in her country: her books were considered feminist and “morally condemnable.” Maha wrote, effectively, about the three taboos in Arabian society: politics, sex and religion. Maha left her country during the bloody repression of the Kurd revolt in 2004 and has lived in Paris since August of 2004.
More: Human Rights Watch awarded her the Hellman-Hammett Prize in 2005. Cordon Ombilical (2010) was selected among six finalists for the Arab Booker Prize. Today, Maha pursues her activity as a militant writer: in her novels, she defends the rights of women in the Arabian context.
